Indian boxer Mary Kom has appealed for assistance as Manipur faces turmoil, and the Indian Railways have canceled all trains due to the unrest.

Boxer Mary Kom pleads

Mary Kom, the boxing legend, has made a plea to the Indian government to intervene and stop the ongoing violence in Manipur. On Wednesday, a tribal revolt sparked fighting in the northeastern state, and as a result, the Army and Assam Rifles were deployed to maintain order. Mary Kom shared images of the burning state on Twitter, tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh, as well as some news channels, with the caption “My state Manipur is burning, kindly help.” The violence erupted during a “Tribal Solidarity March” organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM), where protesters clashed over the non-tribal Meiteis' quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation. According to a senior police officer, the conflict between tribal and non-tribal members has spread to neighboring districts.

The Army and Assam Rifles, working with the state police, were able to put an end to the violence by dawn, and are now relocating more people to safer places. Indian Railways' North East Frontier division has cancelled all Manipur-bound trains due to the state of law and order in the region. The authorities have also suspended internet access and issued a "Source: www.dnpindia.in" order to prevent the violence from spreading. Currently, flag marches are being held to maintain control of the situation.
